CBS Chief Rallies Support For Couric... But Doesn't He Have To?

CBS Chairman Leslie Mooves tried top rally the troops at 'CBS Evening News" around Katie Couric, according to the Associated Press. From the article, "Moonves told CBS News employees that "there are no plans for a change - today, tomorrow and into the future," according to a network executive who was there. The executive spoke on condition of anonymity because the comments were not made public. That doesn't mean Couric's status won't be reviewed if ratings continue to lag - but that won't happen until after the election, the executive said." MORE: Who Would Replace Katie?

First, I would say that Moonves has to step in to try to stop what seems to be a tide of new rumors about Couric's quick demise from 'Evening News'. Someone has to step in to support her. For now, she's the biggest frontline star that CBS News has. Moonves would be crazy to let the criticism boil. Right now, CBS News needs stability more than anything else. Some would argue (and I agree) that a decision to hire Couric as the answer to a news division that stumbled in recent years was short sighted. But, let's give credit. CBS and Moonves has to start some where. The Rather era was over. They need to build and build quickly.

Plus, I'll also say that I believe Couric's broadcast has gotten dramatically better in the last 6-9 months. There was that very awkward and clumsy period of trying to re-invent evening news formats. Once that dust settled however, I believe quality content returned. There are some good storytellers in the CBS stable. I will admit sometimes Couric still seems to be "reading" the news to me instead of communicating and talking to me as a viewer. It's odd. She's been at the anchor desk long anough to really learn to talk to viewers... instead of reading to them. In the end, it's not a bad broadcast. In fact (without dats to support this), I would suggest that the 'CBS Evening News' has the hardest, most serious focus on quality news content of the three main evening news broadcasts. ABC and NBC seem to have ventured way down the path of appeasing the 'lifestyle reporting' culture that has swallowed up quality journalism these days.

I still say... Give Katie A Chance.
