Endless Fascination With Jenna Wolfe on 'Today' - UPDATE

NOTE: THERE ARE MORE THAN 30 WOLFE-ROBACH POSTS. SEARCH FOR THEM ALL BY ENTERING THE NAME IN THE SEARCH BOX IN THE UPPER LEFT CORNER OF THE PAGE

I had a pretty uneventful Thanksgiving weekend about six week ago, so I decided to work on a blog entry early one morning. I noticed an odd combination on the weekend editions of ‘Today’ that weekend. So I started a blog about Jenna Wolfe (who anchors Sunday) and Amy Robach (who anchors Saturday). It’s an odd situation after Campbell Brown bolted for CNN to split female anchoring duties with Lester Holt remaining the best glue to hold the shows together. Well, my blogs about Wolfe and Robach have quickly become the most viewed on my site.

I don’t think anyone really understands the reasoning here. I’ve blogged about the need to groom talent already. Just to make sure I'm not jumping on an 'anti-Jenna-anchoring-Today' bandwagon, what are other sites and blogs saying? One site labels Wolfe a 'News Vixen'. Another blog has a little fun with Wolfe and even Robach's boots. Another blog headlines: 'Another Reason To Hate Jenna Wolfe' (OK, that's a little too personal in my opinion, but it's there.)

This morning I watched hoping to step outside of a TV news junky’s views. One thing kept popping up. I wonder if the appeal for viewers (and NBC) is much like the appeal of the most popular cheerleader in high school or the most popular sorority girl on campus. Admit it. If you were not in her close circle of friends, you rolled your eyes every time she bopped into the classroom or bounced around campus with her gaggle of girlfriends clinging to her purse string. She laughed. She giggled. She was loud. She was spoiled. She was self-involved. She had to be the center of attention. She was a favorite of teachers and professors whether she deserved it or not.

The champagne tasting segment this morning (at 8:45) is the perfect case study for this comparison. It’s oddly appealing only because it’s just so darn annoying to watch. I can imagine the Jenna-doubters rolling their eyes! Holt is like the one nice cheerleader (or football player, no offense) who actually got it. All of those high school and college cliques had one. That person realized that everyone should be respected. Sure some people had more luck or fortunes than others. But, that one person in the popular clique crossed the boundaries. That’s Lester. You can tell he tries to smooth over the rough spots. He tries to focus on the content with an appropriate dab of personality. Here are some comments on my other posts already this morning about today's show.
"I'm so glad I'm not the only one totally disgusted with the obnoxious Jenna Wolfe. She just insulted Carson Daly by telling him not to "mess up" the New Year's Eve celebration at Times Square. He looked shocked, but recovered and said, dryly, "Thanks. I won't." On the o ther hand, I love Lester, and unlike some other posters, I like Meredith V very much."==
"I have never posted before, but this morning I finally felt strong enough to write about how much I dislike Jenna Wolfe. I love Amy Robach and watching on Sunday is painful. I love Lester Holt and am a true Today fan. They need to get rid of Jenna and let Amy have the weekend job. I feel like they are both "auditioning" for the permanent spot, but i like that Jenna has to sit at the news desk and watch Amy anchor and never vice versa
."==
"We are distressed at the increasing and continued presence of Jenna Wolfe on Weekend Today. She is obnoxious and completely ego-centric. NBC should give the full Weekend Today co-host job to Amy Robach who is bright, charming and mature. Lester Holt and Amy Robach are a fantastic team."

On some of my other posts, there are more aggressive comments about Jenna. I still believe that she should pursue every single opportunity that she can in her career. She has to look out for herself. The bloggers are just so annoyed by management’s decision to keep her on the weekend anchor desk… that they make it personal. She may in fact be one of the nicest people the team at NBC knows (or she may not be). But the decision to put her in this position just irritates part of the audience that has watched the weekend editions of ‘Today’ since their debut (I’m a TV news geek… At the time, I really liked Garrick Utley and Mary Alice Williams on the Sunday show).

"Here are some comments from the last post about Jenna Wolfe, Amy Robach and 'Today'.
I really enjoyed the Sunday show today. It is those unpredictable comments that make it fun. Great show Saturday, great show today."
"If you enjoy Lester Holt squirming with confusion and confoundment as to what his role is when his co-host keeps trying to dominate the show, then the show was about as enjoyable as it can get."
"Sundays are just uncomfortable. It is like inviting over the crazy uncle for the Holiday's and being continuosly nervous about what might come out of his mouth. That is the same feeling I get with Jenna Wolfe."
"Jenna's voice is not soothing. She did a piece on a taser party and refrained from her most annoying humor. Howver, her piece on the "what I learned from women who dumped me" was dull. Also, she kept interrupting the guests with stupid mumblings. She soaked up ann curry advertising jenna's dating status."

I know her personally through a friend and it is "me me me.". She would tell outrageous stories. I don't want to slam people. I hope she does well but right now as a morning newscaster she is annoying. I just watched the "Gladiator" segment and it was terrible.

Check out how she tells Matt to be quiet so she can talk at about min 3:34. It is in fun but she is a little abrasive. This isn't sportscasting....

Is this why Matt said the Gladiator segment was a classic and he was sure it would be shown again.

Somehow the Today Show needs to see viewer reaction to Jenna...she is totally obnoxious!!! I am a die-hard Today show fan, but am forced to change the channel evertime she speaks!! get rid of her!! Come back Campbell....

I am a big Today show fan and love Lester Holt on the weekends. He is articulate, charming and entertaining, but the powers that be at the Today show need to know how obnoxious Jenna Wolfe is!!! Her "attempts" at trying to be hip, cool and funny are nothing but annoying. Today is going to lose a lot of loyal fans if they continue to put Jenna on the air. With all of the talent in NY, Jenna is the "best" that you can do? Viewers say: "Put Amy Robach on as permanent weekend co-anchor"

I watch whenever she is on because she is HOT!

I really enjoy Jenna... she's quirky and fun.

She really turned off sports fans with her grating commentary.

Amy is great in the sense she's mature, articulate and gorgeous. However, Jenna also has amazing qualities otherwise she wouldn't be on Today. She's good looking, intelligent, a go-getter and refreshingly irreverent. They have two totally different styles but I think that was exactly NBC Execs thinking. Amy is predictable and Jenna is anything but. They're both great and both different... I also see the chemistry between Lester and Jenna improving.
Jenna might seem self-centered but she is just as self-deprecating... she's just making it fresh, fun and personal.
They're both very different but both are some of the friendliest, down-to-earth women you'll meet and both are some of NBC's greatest recent gets.

Jenna Wolfe is a little dumb I think. Her and Tiki Barber present olympic updates. One of the updates was that the Georgian Olympic women's beach volleyball team, which is comprised of two Brazilians paid to play for Georgia, beat the Russian team. Jenna Wolfe speaks up to make a point. Here's her point. There's Vietnamese and other asians playing badminton for the US so what's the difference? I'm surprised Tiki didn't blow his lid at this piece of idiotic ignorance. He did correct her to say that the badminton team members are American citizens but the Brazilians were not citizens of Georgia. But Jenna continues to say that some American woman athlete, I forget who, played professional sports in a Russian league. I could almost see the exasperation in Tiki's face. Incredibly, after making this comment she seemed pleased with herself saying that she was making especially good points today. Is this girl this stupid? I was waiting for her to say that the US basketball team should play for Africa but, unfortunately, it didn't come.

Tiki's performance on the Olympic broadcast on Wednesday was even worse! First he told us that the water polo match in 1956 was noteworthy because Russia had just invaded Bulgaria, then corrected himself a moment or two later (no doubt after someone yelled in his earpiece), "I meant Hungaria!" Being young is no excuse for being uninformed.

Enjoying the MSNBC's daily update at 5pm ET, but totally not liking Jenna Wolfe... She is rude and uninformed.... I feel so bad for Tiki... He is trying, but she just wants to take all the attention... even from the athletes

Anonymous said...

I agree, just where and how did she get this job. She is terrible at it. A very rude person. I do feel for Tiki sitting next to her.

Anonymous said...

Where did MSNBC come up with this twit Jenna Wolfe. She is not funny or cute. She should have more pride in her job. Rude and doesn't seem to be very friendly at all.

Anonymous said...

Jenna Wolfe is horrible. She should have nothing to do with the Olympics coverage.

I just caught the MSNBC Olympic update at 2:00 pm (PDT), for only the second time. I really liked both Jenna Wolfe and Tiki Barber. Lots of complaints about her, but I like her...she's kind of in your face, say it like it is, funny...much better than the usual staid, boring, safe comments made by most commentators, sports or otherwise. I like her deep, sexy voice too. You go, girl.

Anonymous said...

She kind of annoyed me at first because she talked but she's kind of grown on me a little. Hate to say it but I watch the Olympic update just to see her. She is a little mean though. At least Tiki makes up for that, I guess.

I feel like Jenna really holds back what she wants to say to be politically correct. But in private life, Jenna probably is an ignorant loudmouth, making even ruder comments than she already does about people and things she has no knowledge of.

Anonymous said...

Our household are not fans. Jenna is like that annoying friend that seems to be waiting for you to finish what you are saying so that she can relate the topic to herself. Guess what Jenna...we don't care about you! Incredible as it may sound I just want you to relay the news to me. Do your job and please be quite about yourself.

Anonymous said...

She is very ignarant and prays upon others to see if they make more mistakes than she does. She tries to be "nationalistic" for the USA and it comes off stupid. She tries to be cute and she comes off like a puritan.

Anonymous said...

You all must be friends of Amy Robach...Jenna Wolfe is brilliant.
She keeps the news interesting and fun to watch. Who wants all the gloom and doom all time...lighten up WILL YA!

Sara said...

I like both Amy & Jenna, but Amy is better as an anchor. Jenna is a better at field reporting.
There are times where i just don't get Jenna, and she can be a little bold with her interviewing.

OMG....another Sunday morning with Jenna....why in God's name are the powers that be still have her on the Sunday Today show...YIKES....she is annoying, obnoxious, always interrupting poor Lester (or anyone else for that matter)always mumbling her stupid comments while the guests are on the show....good grief guys...get a grip already....can't any of you see what she is like...are you all bind and deaf or just plain dumb???? What gives here??? Perhaps she is related to one of the higher up producers....that would explain it...can't possibly because she is articulate or intelligent...she surely is not any of those....Amy needs to have the job for both Sat and Sun. We had to endure yet another Sunday with her annoying and "all about me" once again. Your ratings can't possibly be going up with her....
